Fish（鱼) when pronounced in Chinese is yú which is identical to the word 余. 余 (yu) means extra, more than enough or surpluses. Fishes therefore symbolize abundance, wealth and prosperity. The four Chinese characters underneath the fish 年年有余 (nian nian you yu) is often used during the Chinese New Year to wish everyone an abundant of wealth each and every year.
